ABOUT THIS VIDEO
Today I'm building a piece that had a lot of fun unexpected challenges. I am building a cabinet similar to others that I've built in the past, but this one had plenty of "firsts" and new personal records for me, so it was a completely new experience. So come along as we bend wood, apply veneer, and make some huge tambour doors!

A river table...without a river

ABOUT THIS VIDEO In this video I'm building a new dining table using a massive Claro Walnut Slab. I wanted to try my own version of a river table, which let's be honest, isn't really a river table. And I wanted to make a table that would look just as good without a slab top, but looks even more awesome with the slab top. And I have to say, I think I nailed it on this one. In this video, I'm building a fancy pantry for my wife (and my kid and me) to hold our food. And since I can't keep anything simple these days, I had to overcomplicate it and make things interesting. I also had fun figuring out how to use plywood, while doing as little as possible to conceal that it's in fact plywood. Sounds a little confusing, just watch the video and you'll see what 'm talkin...

ABOUT THIS VIDEO This was a fun and extremely challenging build! And it makes sense that I made more mistakes building this than probably any other piece I have made in the past. On top of that, there are all sorts of cool brass details to finish it off. Ho...

As usual, this looks amazing! The greenery could go away, but it's not terrible. I love the organic look. I really don't know what would go in that cubby hole. Maybe a light feature? A stained glass piece? A stained glass piece with a back light? Anyway, it's a masterpiece no matter what! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and talent.

Wonderful build. I hear you on the application of finish. I’ve been putting off applying finish to an acoustic guitar build for a long time. I think it’s got something to do with how the finish accentuates mistakes or maybe I’m just enjoying the build to much. Take out the plastic leaves. They detract from the piece.

Very cool piece - I love the curves and I always think adding curves is a great way to make builds look way nicer than the same thing but made from a box. Also.... Do you keep wearing plum on plum on plum as a running joke or do you actually just have multiple outfits of pure plum?

Drawer length confusion. It looks to me that the fitting instructions say the drawer box length should be 10mm less than the runner. I’ve seen people saying both on UA-cam I can’t work out what’s correct

Not to give you too much 'tude, you should comment clearly on the notion of a climb cut being quite dangerous (more so than you suggest) as it is really _really_ *_really_* considered likely to "get away from you"... much more so than the "normal" cut. A router is/can be far more dangerous than a table saw. A saw will just lop shit off. Not good, but a router can get inside and tear shit up. Which is much much worse, in many cases. Part of it is that a router is moving much much faster than a table saw, often spinning at thousands, not hundreds, of RPMs. The only tool that is potentially more dangerous is the angle grinder, and for much the same reason -- both can pull and get away from you -- so you need to be particularly *wary* when using either in general, and, for the router, doing a climb cut is generally to be avoided except when really really called for, such as your problem of chipouts. Even there, it means you need to be especially careful about maintaining full control over the router, and not overextending yourself. Again, not throwing too much shade, just... you're advising people to do something that is generally to be avoided as much as possible. ;-)

I've been playing around with Metric measuring lately. Although it's unfamiliar, having grown up with Imperial, it is far easier and faster than fractions. Summing whole millimeters is effortless compared to mixed fractions. And plywood thickness--whether we realize it or not--is already in millimeters, so it lends itself to metric. I can see both sides of the 'black poly ruined the piece/Loving the black poly' at the same time, it's a gorgeous black, and is tonally clashing. In this desk there's 3 distinct tones, Warm wood, Cool wood, and black poly.. 3-way toning can work, but especially with warm tone on black poly (cabinetry) while warm tone and black poly could work, it feels a bit too dark here, then the cool wood tone feels clashing because it feels disconnected but terminally attached. It's like going from a spring day, to an autumn day, then it's the pitch black winter.. it's missing a transitional tone to balance, or is disturbing the aesthetic balance with a third tone, conflicting tone, or misplaced distribution of tone. This is my subjective outlook on it, and by no means am I an expert on color matching.. but it definitely feels 'off' to me.

I'm good at safety practices, like making jigs to never get my hands near any moving blade, but I was a slob only vacking the room out once a month. I was smiling as you zoomed back and forth brushing the CNC clean as if it would help a blind machine see what its doing. probably was for the camera to get good view. please forgive if i rant like the ancient boomer I am, but I'm amazed a master carpenter has all there fingers :)

Thanks for asking Shaun. America is the only country that uses imperial, while the rest of the world is using metric. Yet we all have to do the mental olympics converting the measurements while watching. I've even seen non US channels being pushed into using imperial because YT is American. Just try one video using only metric and see how it feels. 🤷‍♂️ you might like diving numbers without fractions.

The comments have already said a lot of good things about grounding and ESD, and, I hope, respiratory protection. But I would like to draw your attention to one more aspect: air humidity. This is a common problem in areas where wood is processed. At around 45% relative humidity, the probability of static charge accumulation begins to increase. At the same time, relative air humidity of about 60% leads to faster settling of fine particles. Depending on the climate you live in, simply leaving your garage door open may be enough. And thanks for such a detailed video!
